I SAW YOU IN FRANCE

I saw you in France, before the war,

At the chateau, when I was poor,

Waiting on the rich to tide me through.

I was taller then, with blacker hair,

And people thought my voice and air distinguished.

I was clothed in tails and feeling elegant, assured,

And feigning politesse.

Such a grave business, serving wine

With the white napkin and the silver tray,

And the ‘Madame, vous voudriez?’

And the ‘Vous monsieur, et vous?’

And the cries of ‘Georges! Du vin!’

Turning from the table with a laden tray,

I straightened up and saw you

In your lacy apron and your frilly cap

As you served the petits fours.

You caught my eye

And we both stood still with shock;

Some form of recognition, as I suppose,

That in forty years, in a world made new,

In altered flesh, not even in France,

At last there would be time.
